Professor Kent Bloomer on the Dominant Void

Kent Bloomer gives a talk on the dominant void, a reprise of a class project first given to us in 1966, in the first year of graduate studies at the Yale School of Architecture. A dominant void is a space that becomes more important, or dominant, than the solids that define it. Professor Bloomer traces the origins of the concept to perceptual reversals of figure-ground relationships. An insightful discussion follows his talk, with analogous examples from music, poetry, acting, etc.

Three Stories by Peter Woerner

Peter Woerner read three stories: Water, the Fonte, and a Stalk of Grass; The Hearth—Il Focolare; and Strange Days. The first two take place in Tuscany, Italy, where Peter rebuilt a ruined villa over many years. The third story takes place in Connecticut, at a more recent house that Peter designed and built.

Peter writes with a spare, lean style that is able to convey the emotion of the story directly. He has a keen eye for detail and is able to remember the many objects, colors, and light that give his descriptions authenticity and life.

Also, you may want to read another Tuscany story that Peter contributed in 2021 called Mercy Killing. It's on Peter's Page.
